Rachel’s detailed hypothetical scenario and question in Japanese is the first multi-TCU utterance in Japanese in this interview, and it paves the way for Tomo to respond in Japanese. Tomo takes up the offered code by producing a Japanese recipient token “a::” (Excerpt 12), which functions as an acknowledgement and a cognitive change-of-state display (similar to “oh”; Heritage 1984a; Ikeda 2007). Rachel then reformulates her previous English prompt (line 457) into Japanese (lines 480–481), explicitly inviting Tomo to offer his advice.
